The Taiwan Chapter on Medical Geology was officially established on May 19, 2010 in Tainan, Taiwan, during the scientific activities of 3rd International Congress on Arsenic in the Environment – As 2010 at National Cheng Kung University. The Chapter is composed of over 12 members with representation from a wide range of disciplines including biomedical, public health and geoscience areas. The Chapter enjoys the participation of geoscientists, epidemiologists, toxicologists, public health professionals and medical doctors, with particular interest in the geochemistry, environmental and human health effects of arsenic from contaminated drinking water.

6-month report from Local Chapter Leader Prof. Chien-Yen Chen:

The leader for the Taiwan Chapter has been voted on and Professor Chien-Yen Chen was selected. The next Taiwan Chapter meeting is scheduled on 10th July and committee organization will be discussed. A medical geology conference will be taking place on the same day. There will be oral and poster sections for local researchers and students. An application for a Ph.D. program for the study of medical geology has been put forward to the Taiwan government in order to recruit students from around the world at the department of Earth and Environmental Sciences in National Chung Cheng University of Taiwan. This program is initiated by Professor Chien-Yen Chen with the aim to have strong international cooperation and connections with Taiwan for medical geology study.

Professor Jiin-Shuh Jean (Department of Earth Sciences, NCKU) was elected as the first term (three years) director general of the Taiwan IMGA Chapter. Director General Jiin-Shuh Jean appointed Professor Ying-Jan Wang (Institute of environmental Medicine, NCKU) as a secretary general and Professor Kuo-Chin Hsu (Department of Resources Engineering, NCKU) as a chairman of the Lecture and Conference committee. We will hold an annual meeting and conference once a year in May to bring together our Taiwan members to discuss medical geology problem in Taiwan.
