Medical Geology in Iran: Geogenic Controls on Environmental Health and Future Research Opportunities

Iran, located within the Alpine–Himalayan tectonic belt, has a complex geological framework characterized by diverse rock units, active tectonics, mineralization zones, and variable geochemical backgrounds. These geological characteristics strongly influence the chemical composition of natural resources, particularly groundwater and soils, and create important links between geological processes and human health.

This presentation provides an overview of Medical Geology in Iran, emphasizing the role of geogenic processes in controlling environmental health risks and opportunities. The interaction between rocks, minerals, water, and biological systems will be discussed through examples from Iranian geological environments. Particular attention will be given to groundwater geochemistry, natural sources and distribution of potentially toxic elements, fluoride enrichment, and the role of mineral–water interactions in element mobility.

The presentation will also discuss the influence of geological conditions on soil composition and geogenic dust, which may contribute to environmental exposure pathways. Selected examples from mineralized regions and hydrogeological systems in Iran will highlight the importance of multidisciplinary studies integrating geology, geochemistry, environmental science, and health sciences.

Although Iran has significant potential for Medical Geology research due to its geological diversity, this interdisciplinary field is still developing. Establishing stronger scientific networks, educational programs, and research collaborations can contribute to advancing Medical Geology in Iran. This presentation will also introduce future perspectives for developing Medical Geology research and training initiatives through academic and innovation platforms.

Zahra Soleimani-Rad is an Iranian geologist with an M.Sc. in Petrology from Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran, Iran. Her research interests include Medical Geology, environmental geochemistry, mineral resources, and geotourism. She has presented research on the Medical Geology of the Zarrshouran gold deposit in Iran and is currently working to promote Medical Geology research and education through collaborations with Shahid Beheshti University and its Science and Technology Park. She is also a certified geotourism guide and the founder of Rad Stone, an independent initiative focused on gemstones, lapidary arts, and Earth science outreach.
