Kim Dowling
Previously she has held leadership positions at Federation University and the University of Ballarat including Associate Dean Learning and teaching, Chair of Academic Board University Council member and Dean. She is an active researcher in the field of environmental contamination, disturbed landscapes and human health. She has a broad background in Governance and Policy Development and a proven track record in environmental investigation of brownfield sites.
Kim’s research addresses significant questions associated with contaminated land (natural or human affected) and its effect on ecosystem and human health. Climate fluctuation means that fire and flood events are now common, and both exacerbate the mobility of contaminants, and have global impactions for human health. The assessment, risks, and risk mitigations are a focus of current work.
Kim completed her undergraduate studies in geology at UNSW. After a stint in the gold mining industry working in Meekatharra, Western Australia, she completed a PhD at James Cook University addressing exploration techniques for gold mineralization using chemical and quartz textural differences. Subsequently, Kim worked at the University of Papua New Guinea, and various Australian Universities to address environmental change and to completed further studies. Kim has additional post graduate qualifications in Tertiary Teaching and Environmental Management. She has been a member of the International Medical Geology Association for more than ten years and is an effective communicator to academic and general audiences and regularly reports on environmental matters.
