The 82nd Executive Committee Meeting and Latin America Geoscience Workshop, organized by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS), took place in Bogotá, Colombia, starting on January 22.

The first two days were dedicated to the Latin America and the Caribbean Geoscience Workshop, which gathered 26 invited speakers and around 100 participants. Interesting and exciting presentations covered a variety of themes, including geological hazards, global change, raw materials, renewable energy, and hydrology. The participants attended from many Latin American and Caribbean countries: Colombia, Cuba, Brazil, México, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Argentina, Bolivia, Costa Rica, and Chile, as well as other geoscientists from other countries. On the second day, the participants were divided into breakout groups to discuss the main issues and outcomes that would benefit the area across the various themes. The strategy, priority actions, and goals will be summarized in a document to strengthen countries’ collaboration in geosciences.

The workshop was followed by the Open Session of the IUGS 82nd Executive Committee Meeting on 24 and 25 January.  In this session, the Executive Committee provided information on its activities. The IUGS constituent groups, the adhering and the affiliated organizations reported their activities and achievements over the past year, and their financial requirements for this year.

The International Medical Geology Association (IMGA) Co‑chair in Geosciences, Prof. Maria Aurora Armienta, had the privilege of presenting the IMGA report in person, and her contribution was very well received by the audience. IMGA Chair Prof. Chaosheng Zhang and IMGA Secretary and IUGS Councillor Prof. Lola Pereira attended the meeting online.
