6-month report from Local Chapter Secretary Dr. Kunio Furuno:
Meetings
The meetings of the officers of Japan chapter (Chair: Hisashi Nirei and Secretary: Kunio Furuno) were held every month. They discussed about the activity of the chapter.
Training Course
We are involved in many training courses on environmental geology. During this period, the 3-day ‘14th Training Course of Investigation Methods, Geo-pollution Research and Remediation in Surplus Soil and Disposal Site’, which mainly focused on heavy metal pollution, was held on Katori, Chiba prefecture in Japan. The training course consisted of lectures and field training. The main contents were groundwater basin management and groundwater flow, geological survey and boring, geo-pollution, radioactivity and radioactive pollution, man-made strata and heavy metal pollution, etc. (Photos included in Members section.)
Cooperation
The Japan chapter closely cooperates with the following organizations:
- Japanese Society of Geo-pollution Science, Medical Geology and Urban Geology Association: http://www.jspmug.org/index.html
- Japan branch of IUGS-GEM (International Union of Geological Science) (Commission on Geo-Science for Environmental Management): http://www.iugs-gem.org/#Commission on Geo-science for Environmental Management
- Working Group of Manmade strata and Geo-pollution of IUGS-GEM: http://manmade.iugs-gem.org/
- The geological Society of Japan (Specialized group of Environmental geology): http://www.geosociety.jp/pecialized
Conferences
We were involved in the following conference:
- 24th Symposium on Geo-environments and Geo-technics. November 2014 Nihon University Tokyo Program: http://www.jspmug.org/envgeo_sympo/24th_sympo/24th_sympo_prog.pdf (in Japanese) Proceedings (English contents, English abstracts, English explanation of Figures and tables)
Presentations and Papers
Most of the members of the Japan chapter had oral and poster presentations in the following conference. The presentations may not focus on health and medicine directly but are related to them from a view point of the environment.

2012
The Japan Chapter is very active and has 12 members. These are a mixture of environmental geoscientists and chemists. The Chapter organises the very successful Annual Symposium for Geo-pollution Science, Medical Geology and Urban Geology and publishes the Journal on Geo-pollution Science, Medical Geology and Urban.
Geology Prof. Hisashi and his colleagues are also very involved in radioactivity assessments following the Tohoku earthquake in March last year. They have been surveying radioactive geopollution and the behaviour of radioactive dust material from Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant No.1. The IMGA Committee sends its sympathy and support to the Japan IMGA Chapter following the terrible earthquake and continuing environmental problems in Japan and very much appreciates the work that the IMGA Local Chapter is doing in very difficult circumstances.
