Medical Geology and Psychology special session:
Geology can affect the psychology of organisms positively and negatively. For example, Salt cave can play an important role in relaxation and healing from psychological problems. On the other side, Geological hazards, toxic metals, trace elements can be the cause of many neurological symptoms and syndromes.
According to that only very few researchers have addressed the relationship between geology and psychology, we planned for this session to fill this neglected area for the first time.
Topics and keywords:
— Minerals and mood.
— Copper and schizophrenia
— Lithium in water and suicide mortality.
— Relaxation and healing in salt caves.
— Alzheimer and heavy metals
— Phobias related to the geological hazards (Geo-Phobias)
— Post-traumatic stress disorder after earthquakes and tsunamis.
— Toxic heavy metals associated with neurological symptoms and autism.
— Tourette syndrome and magnesium deficiency.
— Minerals for premenstrual syndrome treatment.
— Restless legs syndrome and Iron Deficiency.
— Trace mineral imbalances associated with Wilson & hemochromatosis diseases.
— Psychology of geophagy and pica.

The leader for the Taiwan Chapter has been voted on and Professor Chien-Yen Chen was selected. The next Taiwan Chapter meeting is scheduled on 10th July and committee organization will be discussed. A medical geology conference will be taking place on the same day. There will be oral and poster sections for local researchers and students. An application for a Ph.D. program for the study of medical geology has been put forward to the Taiwan government in order to recruit students from around the world at the department of Earth and Environmental Sciences in National Chung Cheng University of Taiwan. This program is initiated by Professor Chien-Yen Chen with the aim to have strong international cooperation and connections with Taiwan for medical geology study.
2014
IMGA would like to thank Prof Jiin-Shuh Jean for his excellent 3-year term as Chapter Leader. IMGA also welcomes Professor Chien-Yen Chen as the new elected leader of the Taiwan Chapter. The website of the Taiwan Local Chapter is http://proj.ncku.edu.tw/imgatwn.
2010
Professor Jiin-Shuh Jean (Department of Earth Sciences, NCKU) was elected as the first term (three years) director general of the Taiwan IMGA Chapter. Director General Jiin-Shuh Jean appointed Professor Ying-Jan Wang (Institute of environmental Medicine, NCKU) as a secretary general and Professor Kuo-Chin Hsu (Department of Resources Engineering, NCKU) as a chairman of the Lecture and Conference committee. We will hold an annual meeting and conference once a year in May to bring together our Taiwan members to discuss medical geology problem in Taiwan.

June 2015
6-month report from Local Chapter Leader Dr. Mumtaz Hussain.
General
In general performance of IMGA-PAKISTAN CHAPTER has remained satisfactory with respect to introducing Medical Geology among geological and medical circles and professional events. However, membership campaign is yet to gain momentum. We will soon be able to increase membership.
Participation in Events
We participated in following events and highlighted Medical Geology:
|
–
|
International Cooperation under UN |
| United Nations needs to act as Apex Coordination Body through IPCC with a view to integrate the inputs of member countries for mitigating adverse impacts of climate change. This body should meet regularly on quarterly basis for review of the progress made and further harmonist. | |
|
–
|
Sharing of Information |
| Extensive sharing of information and research outcomes should be done so that impacts of global warming and snowball may be minimized. | |
|
–
|
Formulating Policies |
| National level policies should be formulated on multifarious aspects of climate change in light of the UN guideline. Relevant stakeholders need to be involved in such activities. | |
|
–
|
Awareness and Educational Programmes |
| Electronic, print and social media should be optimally utilized to launch mass awareness programmes. Such speedy passage of information will help the respective policy makers and planners to undertake effective measures against impending issues of climate change well in time. Formal educational courses in the academic institutions will certainly help in equipping the students with necessary technical know-how. | |
|
–
|
Conducting R&D on Health |
| Health of human beings and other living organisms is being negatively impacted. There is dire need of conducting researches on health of human beings, animals and plants in various countries at national, regional & global levels. In this regard health of children and women is more at stake especially in developing world. | |
|
–
|
Combating Natural Calamities |
| Natural calamities like volcanoes, earthquakes, floods & droughts have been occurring in the world. These are causative factors for climate change. These further aggravate the ensuing impacts. These should be suitably managed at all echelons. |
|
–
|
Awareness programs about prevalent diseases in Pakistan should be launched vigorously through media. |
|
–
|
Basic Health Care should form part of curricula in schools and colleges. |
|
–
|
All stakeholders should work together for environmental preservation at all levels. |
|
–
|
The federal and provincial governments should make master plans for providing clean air, potable water and pure food to all citizens. |
|
–
|
The federal and provincial governments should enhance budgetary allocation for health. |
|
–
|
It is recommended to use modern tools for management of prevalent diseases. |
|
–
|
There are significant and growing opportunities for collaboration between the geoscience and human health science for understanding |
| and defining interactions between the natural (geological) environment and human health. |
Future Events
2014
The Pakistan Chapter arranged two events titled Water and Waste Treatment and Environmental Health on 20 and 21 June, 2014 respectively. In these conferences the role of Medical Geology was specially highlighted.
Members also participated in events arranged by other Organizations.
During November 2014 we held a conference on Multi Modal Transport Systems in which Eco and Health aspects were included.

The meetings of the officers of Japan chapter (Chair: Hisashi Nirei and Secretary: Kunio Furuno) were held every month. They discussed about the activity of the chapter.
Training Course
We are involved in many training courses on environmental geology. During this period, the 3-day ‘14th Training Course of Investigation Methods, Geo-pollution Research and Remediation in Surplus Soil and Disposal Site’, which mainly focused on heavy metal pollution, was held on Katori, Chiba prefecture in Japan. The training course consisted of lectures and field training. The main contents were groundwater basin management and groundwater flow, geological survey and boring, geo-pollution, radioactivity and radioactive pollution, man-made strata and heavy metal pollution, etc. (Photos included in Members section.)

The Japan Chapter is very active and has 12 members. These are a mixture of environmental geoscientists and chemists. The Chapter organises the very successful Annual Symposium for Geo-pollution Science, Medical Geology and Urban Geology and publishes the Journal on Geo-pollution Science, Medical Geology and Urban.
Geology Prof. Hisashi and his colleagues are also very involved in radioactivity assessments following the Tohoku earthquake in March last year. They have been surveying radioactive geopollution and the behaviour of radioactive dust material from Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant No.1. The IMGA Committee sends its sympathy and support to the Japan IMGA Chapter following the terrible earthquake and continuing environmental problems in Japan and very much appreciates the work that the IMGA Local Chapter is doing in very difficult circumstances.
